Hillhead/Jordanhill 24 Murrayfield Wanderers 38
On a fine autumnal Sunday at Hughenden, which the poet John Keats would surely have approved, “Wandies” claimed the first win of the season in this “Scottish Derby” by six tries to four.
With a sizeable crowd watching, Hills started the match well but could not register a score in the early exchanges. Wandies then came to the fore with centre Helen Nelson making some excellent linebreaks, with good support from her backline. Hannah Smith scored for Hills to register their only try of the first half as Wandies continued to take their opportunities entering the break 28-5 up.
The visiting side stretched their lead to 38-5 at the beginning of the second. Hills eventually found their rhythm and fought back in the last quarter of the game, scoring a further three tries from Louise McMillan, Kirstin Daly and Abi Evans in the process to claim a four try bonus point.
Hillhead/Jordanhill’s next league match, following an excellent training session for Women’s Sport Week on Wednesday (5 new players), is against Ayr at Millbrae on Friday 7 October. Kick off 745pm.
