Harte Sparkles but Hills Stumble

There was little “ mellow fruitfulness “ about “Hills” performance on a glorious autumnal afternoon at Hughenden when their visitors , Kirkcaldy, displayed a ruthless brand of rugby in overwhelming their hosts by four goals and six tries to a solitary goal. The “Hills” forwards were overwhelmed by the physical superiority of the rather well fed, but technically well drilled Kirkcaldy pack who had initial set piece dominance until the scrums became uncontested, due to an injury sustained by tight head prop George Stephenson. The battle on the touchline also went the visitors way, and the choice first phase possession Kirkcaldy enjoyed allowed them to establish no end of attacking positions. The one way traffic in the first half was interrupted occasionally by “Hills” break outs spearheaded by Rory Harte which, on one occasion with clever interplay with Scott Halliday and Owen Gemmell, should have produced a score, but the chance went a begging.

The margin after forty minutes was seventeen points in the visitors’ favour, but the game ran away irretrievably from “Hills” in the second period when Kirkcaldy found plenty of gas to rattle on a further unanswered seven tries. But the “Hills” could not be accused of throwing in the towel, and they battled away through James Reekie, Scott Halliday and the irrepressible Rory Harte who franked his fine match performance with a magical try in the final minute with two “shimmies” which totally bamboozled the visitors’ defence. The try was goaled by Harte who therefore earned the distinction of being the scorer of “Hills” first try in this season’s NL2 league competition.
