Some Green Shoots of Recovery in a Game of Two Halves
Preston Lodge 36 points Hillhead/Jordanhill 21 points
The south westerly wind which blew at times fiercely across the open spaces of Pennypit Park provided the perfect backcloth for the well known game of two halves in which the team playing with the elements makes full use of the conditions to ground their opponents down. This it was that “PL” dominated the first forty minutes of play taking advantage of both the slope and wind to put five tries past their visitors. The “Hills” had difficulty securing either quality ball or field position and had to rely on the exemplary kicking skills of full back Rory Harte to relieve pressure on their try line. Their cause was not helped either by their combative back row forward, Owen Gemmell, receiving a head cut which later required twelve stitches, and captain. Calum Stove, being sin binned.
The second half thankfully witnessed an improvement in Hills fortunes with their forwards beginning to put together some goodish periods of driving play, sparked by Stove’s line out work and Scott Whiteford’s ball carrying. Between the fifty fifth and seventieth minute, “Hills” recorded three unanswered tries : Scott Halliday the first from a fine midfield break; scrum half, Ross Thomson, the second, from a characteristic sniping run close to the scrum and lastly Ryan Reilly from a close range pick up. Rory Harte converted all three and it seemed as if “Hills” were heading for a try bonus point, but slackness at a scrum on their own ten metre line allowed “PL” to nick the ball and begin a movement which led to their sixth and final try of the afternoon. Try as the “Hills” might they could not rediscover their continuity play, and had to settle for a fifteen point defeat. There was sufficient however in flashes during this game to give coaches, players and their small band of supporters some encouragement for the fixtures which lie ahead.
Next Saturday the 1st October, Hills entertain Biggar at Hughenden with a 15.00 hours KO.
