Hills Win Derby Match on Eve of Their 21st

Cartha QP Women 10 Hillhead/Jordanhill 87

On the eve of Hillhead/Jordanhill Ladies’ 21st birthday and, on a fine Friday evening for an open game, both sides played entertaining rugby throughout. Despite Cartha’s determined performance in the set scrum and on the touchline, once the ball reached the “Hills” wide channels, the home team had no answer to the power and grace of the visitors’ twin strike runners, Abi Evans and Hannah Smith, who between them contributed some eleven out of their side’s fifteen tries.

Elsewhere the evergreen Heather Lockhart finished well from close range and Louise McMillan ran sinuously from forty metres to score. Jemma Forsyth showed fine vision to take a wonderful line and accept Ally Cook’s well timed pass, whilst Lauren Hagan showed exceptional promise in ball carrying to finish off well from thirty metres. Mairi McDonald converted two of the first half tries to allow her team to reach halftime forty-one points to ten up. Ally Cook, a half time replacement at stand-off, added eight goal points in the second half with the referee blowing for full-time at eighty-seven points to ten.

Although the try scoring was dominated by their two finishers, the Hills demonstrated a willingness to work as a team with good offloading to put Abi Evans and Hannah Smith in space. For their part the Cartha side tackled and competed well but were ultimately outgunned by the visitors’ finishers.

Hillhead/Jordanhill’s next league match is against Murrayfield Wanderers at Hughenden on Sunday 2nd October. Kick off 2pm.
