GHK 65pts Hillhead/Jordanhill 21pts
On a perfect day for running rugby on a gloriously firm Old Anniesland pitch, GHK were almost out of sight at the end of the first period of play, having scored some five tries only two of which were converted with “Hills” failing to move the electronic scoreboard. GHK were well worth their twenty nine point advantage at the interval, as “Hills” had shown only rare glimpses of what they might do with any kind of useable ball. Once Owen Gemmell burst through on his own and made some sixty metres in attack, but the move fizzled out through lack of support; while loose head prop, Ross Jackson, made good ground through the middle on another occasion, but once again any building of phases was limited.
The second half continued in the same depressing fashion of the first forty minutes with GHK advancing unchallenged to forty three nil, but then “Hills “ finally woke up and produced an intense period of pressure on the home line which after some six minutes of patient play saw veteran Chis Tulloch cross the line for a fine team try which Bradley Robbins converted. A second period of pressure in the home twenty two allowed open side Ryan Reilly to touch down again with Robbins bringing out the full points. Suddenly there was a frisson of excitement in the away support that something might happen. Unfortunately the action occurred at the wrong end with GHK profiting from some sloppy ball retention by “Hills” . Yet the prospect of a “Hills” try bonus point seemed very much possible when Robbins cleverly intercepted a loose GHK pass to race unopposed to the posts for a fine individual try which he converted. This took the score to fifty points to twenty one for the home team who then mercilessly slapped down the brief “Hills” fight back to score three more unconverted tries in the final eight minutes of play to run out deserving winners.
“Hills” will wish to hold on to the fighting spirit they showed during the second half of this game when they return to Hughenden next week to play visitors, Peebles, with a 15.00 kick off.
