GU HILLS LIGHTS DIMMED BY GLENS 2 AT HUGHENDEN

GU Hills 15 points Allan Glens 2nd XV 24 points

In a thoroughly entertaining West Reserve League 2 game played under the Hughenden floodlights on Friday evening, and watched by over 120 supporters, GU Hills, in their first competitive league game in their new branding, were just pipped at the post by their visitors 24-15. At half time, Glens held a narrow lead, 12pts – 10, 2 tries each, BUT GU Hills hit back to lead 15-12 well into the final quarter of the game.  But the stronger and more street wise Glens found the legs to run hard and direct through the splintered home defence to score 2 more tries and close the game out at 24-15

The coltish GU Hills squad, fielding Hills President Gary Kitchener in the pack, played the game at 100 mph which at times was exhilarating for players and spectators alike, but generally without establishing any dominant field positions from where they might have been able to play some better continuity rugby. The first 40 minutes saw GU Hills going from side to side, whereas Glens were much more pragmatic, favouring route 1 ball and driving straight at the opposition. This template was repeated in the second half with Glens ultimately triumphing.

However the more the GU Hills side train and play together the better they will become under the watchful eye of head coach Aaron Conway. Their next game is away at Bellsland where they play Kilmarnock 2nd XV on Saturday September 16.
