HILLS TRIUMPH IN LATE AUTUMNAL SUN

Hillhead Jordanhill 1st XV 59 points Perthshire 1st XV 15 points

On a perfect day for running rugby with no weather interference and a fine playing surface, Hills cruised to an emphatic win against a struggling Perthshire squad which started with just 16 fit players and finished the match with only 14 on the field.

Hills had secured their bonus point by scoring 4 tries in the first half with the visitors seizing on the occasional poor Hills handling in attack to race away and notch 2 of their own The one area where Perthshire achieved parity was in the set scrummage where their tight five provided a contest for most of the game. The mid point of the game found the score Hills 24 Perthshire 10.

The second half saw the visitors tire and allow the Hills runners to excel in the broken play. Notable for their bullocking, line breaking runs were props, captain Ross Jackson and Euan Shearer, while in the midfield, the “Ginger Flash” ( aka Damien Genocchio) was his usual elusive and silky self. Man of the match, No. 8 Paddy Nicholson, was in fine form with his tidying of the ball and his frequent breaking of the gain line off the scrummage. Debutant, Stuart Lewis playing at 10, led the line well and distributed the ball effectively, converting 7 of the 9 tries scored in the game. Perthshire were never totally out of it at any stage, rallying to score a good second half try with some continuity rugby, but their 4th, bonus point try remained out of reach due their being short handed.

Hills try scorers were Liam Tighe, Harry Perston, Damien Genocchio ( 2 ), Euan Shearer ( 2 ), Matt Henderson, Fraser Ebbitt and Jonathan Newton.

Finally thanks to match referee, Craig McCann, for his flawless officiating.

Hills play Royal High next on Saturday November 26th at Barnton with a 14.00 KO. Travelling Spectators very welcome.
