It’s pleasing to watch young men, more or less straight from Secondary school, fitting into the senior domestic rugby environment. National league 3 season 2024/2025 is proving a testing experience given its very competitive nature. This brief narrative features 3 of these young men who contributed tries to Hills victory in the Cup vs Glens
First up is left winger, Lewis Herd, whose finishing skills provided 2 of his team’s tries. His strength in the tackle and collision area also make a significant contribution to his sides all round abilities.
Next is right winger, Callum Speirs, whose debut was marked by a fine try. In such a competitive fixture, Callum did not look out of place .
Finally, the Ulsterman, James Agnew, knows only one route when he has the ball in hand and that is the straight line between him and the opposition and/or the try line. James’s try at Glens sparked Hills second half comeback and it was a cracker ; first receiver from breakdown ball some 10 metres from the hosts line. No-one could put him down !!
WELL DONE PLAYERS AND COACHES
Brothers in Arms
Pictured at the end of their National Cup game v Glens on Saturday are the Hills centre pairing of Niall Hall and Damien Genocchio ( aka The ginger Flash).
They’ve been on quite a rugby journey since they left school together in Aberdeen. University and Club rugby in Aberdeen, appearances for the Scotland Rugby League International squad and now in the Hills colours.
Those who know both Niall and Damien as rugby players will be “ mildly” astonished to learn that Niall played at 12 in Hills Cup victory. The quiet man from the Granite City is normally to be found in the cauldron of the front row, but “ clearly” has the skill set required for to-day’s versatile rugby player. Meanwhile “ Demo” is a man of many rugby parts, having played league rugby at 13, 14 and 15 for Hills over the last 3 seasons. When in the groove, the Ginger Flash can be a deadly finisher.
